On the final morning of our trip we looked around Stamford and the station. It gets two stars in the book and that is mainly because it is a quaint old style town station.
The front is somewhat spoiled by the cars and signs.

There were a lot of displays in the blocked off windows with pictures and historical information about the town and the station.

Not easy to see in this picture, but notice the tunnel under the town. This was apparently insisted upon when permission was given for the station to be built. A well preserved and pained footbridge in the foreground.

From a distance the signal book looked as if it might be in use but it appeared to be rather tatty and overgrown.

I haven’t looked but assume there was a third platform here and the track was taken up and the area filled in.

Jenkins mentions in his book that the local landowner, who opposed the railway, later realised what a good thing. He therefore supported the building of a rival line and station elsewhere in the town. The sign on the left reveals that this is the Old Station House.
