The Statute of Apprentices of 1563 remained in force until 1814. This forbade anyone entering a trade without first securing an apprenticeship. Normally a boy entered an apprenticeship at around the age of 14 and served 7 years. In addition to teaching a trade it was a useful way of keeping young men under control.
An Indenture bound a boy to his master. The parents had to pay a premium to the master. In the case of paupers this was paid by the overseer of the poor. There were regular cases in the Court of Sessions relating to mistreatment of boys, break of the contract and so on.
From 1710 to 1811 Stamp Duty was payable on indentures.
This indenture made the eleventh day of March in the third Year of the
Reign of our Sovereign George the second by the Grace of God, of Great-Britain,
France, and Ireland, King --- Defender of the Faith, &c Annoq; Dom.
