William Stafford (192-B)
William:1720-?
William was baptized in 1720 in Dunton Basset to Francis and Mary Stafford.
There is a William Stafford who died
in
1770 who could well be the same person, however I do not know his age at
death.
There is a William Stafford who paid
land Tax in Ashley in 1801. By then this William would be 81 and there
is no evidence for the death of a William Stafford after this date.
Beyond this I currently have no further evidence for William.
Thomas Stafford (96) and Sarah
Howlatt / Judith ? (97)
Thomas:1721-1796 Judith:?-1796
Thomas was baptized in 1721 in Ashley to Francis and Mary Stafford.
It seems likely that Thomas first married Sarah Howlatt on 10 Oct 1748 at St. Swithun's Great Dalby. Thomas is said to be of Medbourne and Sarah of Weston by Welland.
If this is right then they had one son Thomas and then Sarah died, but I have no evidence for her death.
The mother of the remaining children was Judith. At this stage I have
found no trace of her marriage or maiden name. I suspect her name was Judith
Wilson.
They had 7 children, all baptized at St. Giles' Medbourne.
Children | Baptized | Place | Notes | Code |
Thomas | 15 Jul 1750 | Medbourne | His mother was Sarah | 96-H |
Francis | 5 Jun 1752 | Medbourne | died 15 Feb 1831 in Medbourne | 96-A |
Judith | 7 Apr 1754 | Medbourne | Judith Meadows in Thomas' will
Married John Meadows 15 Sep 1777 Medbourne. |
96-B |
John | 2 Nov 1755 | Medbourne | 96-C
Mary | 15 Apr 1757 | Medbourne | Mary Freeston in Thomas' will
with daughters Elizabeth and Mary.
Married Joshaul Freestone 29 Jan 1781 Medbourne |
96-D |
Wilson | 19 Feb 1759 | Medbourne | Buried 27 Jun 1835 Ashley aged 77 | 48 |
Joseph | 9 Jan 1761 | Medbourne | 96-F
William | 5 Jun 1763 | Medbourne | 96-G |
Judith was buried 12 Mar 1796 in Medbourne churchyard.
Thomas was buried 21 Jun 1796 in Medbourne, therefore he was about 75 years of age.
Thomas made his will 27 March
1795 and was evidently weak when he made it.
He describes himself as a 'Yeoman of Medbourn'. By this stage in history
the term 'yeoman' generally referred to a person who owned freehold or
leasehold to the land which they farmed (other farmers being 'husbandmen').
He left one shilling to Thomas.
He left thirty three pounds each to Francis, John and Joseph, Judith
and Mary.
He left thirteen pounds to Wilson.
All his household he left to his grandaughters, Elizabeth and Mary
the daughters of Mary.
The will was executed 27 May 1797 the sole executor being Francis.
Francis Stafford (192-F)
and Ann
Francis:1730-1806 Ann:?c1732-?1815
Francis was baptized in Ashley in 1730 to Francis and Mary Stafford
I have no record for their marriage but they had five children baptised
at Ashley.
Children | Baptized | Place | Notes | Code |
Mary | 1 Mar 1753 | Ashley | This is probably the Mary who died 30 Jan 1825 aged 71 | 192-FA |
Thomas | 19 May 1755 | Ashley | 192-FB
Elizabeth | 5 Jun 1757 | Ashley | 192-FC
Francis | 8 Jul 1759 | Ashley | This entry is not in the IGI. I have no further info for him. | 192-FF |
Hannah | 26 Apr 1761 | Ashley | 192-FD
Susannah | 4 Sep 1763 | Ashley | 192-FE |
When in 1750 his father, Francis, the entries for Francis Stafford in the Ashley Tithes book continue. Presumably the land therefore passed from father to son, though the will would not suggest so, unless it had already been passed on when the father died. There is a tithe rent paid on a quartern of land from then on until 1770 (which is the last year recorded in the book and other pieces of loose paper).
There is a Francis Stafford who was buried 16 Feb 1806. Initially I assumed that this was him, however there is also Francis his son and Francis the son of John and Ann (below) both born in 1759.
It is likely that this Ann is the one who died 29 Aug 1815 in Ashley aged 83.
John Stafford (192-H) and
Ann Tolton / Elizabeth Wignall
John:1734-1782 Ann:?-1772 or 1779
John was baptized in Ashley in 1734 to Francis and Mary Stafford
John married Ann Tolton in Ashley 9 May 1757
They had 7 children baptised at Ashley and Medbourne:
Children | Baptized | Place | Notes | Code |
Mary | 14 Aug 1757 | Ashley | 192-HA
Francis | 17 Sep 1759 | Medbourne | 192-HB
John | 14 Feb 1761 | Medbourne | 192-HC
Thomas | 16 May 1763 | Ashley | died 12 Sep 1830 Ashley | 192-HD |
Zacharias | 31 Mar 1766 | Ashley | 192-HE
Joseph | 10 Jul 1768 | Ashley | died 3 Apr 1816 Ashley age 47 | 192-HF |
Hannah | 24 Mar 1771 | Ashley | buried 10 Apr 1771 | 192-HG |
It seems that Ann died and John remarried.
There were two Ann Staffords who
died 24 Jan 1772 and 9 Sep 1779, in neither instance is there an age.
John Stafford (widower) married
Elizabeth Wignall (widow) 13 Nov 1782 in Ashley.
There is an Elizabeth Stafford who was buried
in Ashley in 1794.
There does not seem to be a burial entry for John Stafford.
Zachariah Stafford (192-I)
and Elizabeth Timson
Zachariah:1736-? Elizabeth:1732?-1824?
Zachariah was baptized in Ashley in 1736 to Francis and Mary Stafford
Zachariah married Elizabeth Timson (of Ashley) in Ashley 11 Apr 1757.
There is an Elizabeth Stafford who was buried in Ashley in 1824 aged 92. This would put her birth as 1732.
I have found no evidence of any children for this couple.
