What is a Gun Polisher?

Gun Polishers
From 'The Manufacture of Sporting Guns and Rifles' by Mr R S Smithe (1913) quoted in Birmingham Gunamakers (SoG - WA/L 84)

A list of 20 different tasks of gunmaking are given:
"16	Polishers are men employed in polishing the action and lockwork ready for engraving. It is unusual, in Birmingham, for the polisher to do the hardening and bluing as well."

"It is not an uncommon practice for men to pay rent for their benches in the factory and to take outside work when their employers cannot give them sufficient work to keep them fully engaged. The amount paid is usually 1s per week for bench and 6d per week for gas, with an additional 1s or 1s 6d for every man employed by the worker and 6d for every boy."
